The Alabama Wheelmen held a Christina Genco Alabama Memorial Ride on June 3, 2012 to pay tribute to her life, raise funds for the Christina Clarke Genco Foundation, and raise awareness in the area for cyclists on the roads. The event was blessed with excellent weather and succeeded on all fronts.
“This was truly something special, we all felt blessed to be able to participate if even on a small scale,” said James Dawson, who organized the ride. Dawson got in touch with Caroline Genco, President of the CCG Foundation, earlier this year. For this ride, rest stops were manned at three different locations. Tonie and Adam Niblett from the Northeast Alabama Community College hosted a rest stop near the campus with the help of John Howe, who also set up a rest stop near Peak’s Corner. A rest stop was also set up at Little River Canyon Overlook. Alabike provided large signs that warned motorists on Hwy 35 and Hwy 75 to watch for cyclists on the roads. The Rainsville police helped monitor traffic on Hwy 35 on Sand Mountain where the riders were crossing near the finish of the 80 mile course. Both Jacqy Stone and Jamie Miernik helped the event run smoothly. The event raised over $500 for the CCG Foundation.
Endless thanks to James Dawson and the Alabama Wheelmen for organizing this ride and for all of the support!
